The darkness grows denser, and danger lurks around every corner. Each step forward is a dance with death, a macabre game in which I know the rules only too well. The mortality rate is rising, and with each swing of my scythe, I feel the risk relentlessly weighing on my shoulders. My aim is clear: I don’t just want to strike, but also to parry, to fend off my opponent’s attack and turn his weapon into my own strength.
But therein lies my shortcoming – parrying is a tricky beast, and I’m still fighting against my own shortcomings.
I originally wanted to get by with the caestus, but it feels like I’m fighting blind. Insecurity is ever-present – the gauntlet, which should be my weapon for parrying, disappears in the chaos of the fight. The shield offers me a deceptive spark of security, a last bastion against death. It allows me to twist around my opponent, to read his movements and to absorb a hit in case of emergency.
The black knight on the Road of Sacrifices was a particular challenge. Just seeing him triggered fear in me, and I felt the respect that only comes from facing a worthy opponent. Even though danger was ever-present, I managed to parry some of his powerful blows – a small victory in an endless war.
With the scythe, I perform a dance that often turns into nothingness.
Too often, the blade glides through the opponent as if he were only a shadow. The scythe’s demands are ruthless, and I wonder if it challenges or punishes me. A greatsword and shield are comparatively like a gentle lullaby in a storm – simple, predictable, safe. But safety is deceptive, and I want more.
The fight against Crystal Sage was a tough game. I had prepared myself for more resistance, for more attempts, but luck was with me. Perhaps it was only a fleeting mercy, a reprieve before the next inevitable challenge.
