Shard begins beneath the broken Forest-Spanning Greatbridge, still carrying the lesson of the War-Dead Catacombs: knowledge and power mean little if the body cannot survive long enough to use them.
Her path first leads into Altus Tunnel, where miners labour beneath the golden plateau and crystal growths spread through the darkness. At its depths, two Crystalians guard the mine together—one armed with a spear, the other with a ringblade. For a sorcerer increasingly devoted to crystal, the encounter feels less like an invasion and more like an uncomfortable family dispute.
Back beneath the open sky, Shard crosses the eastern and western windmill pastures. The turning sails and golden fields offer the appearance of peace, but the burning corpses and dancing villagers suggest that Altus has developed its own peculiar understanding of celebration.
A troll-drawn carriage soon provides an opportunity for less dignified entertainment. Shard interferes with the escort, turns order into confusion, and once again proves that charm magic is at its finest when everyone else performs the dangerous work.
The road west grows darker beneath Mt. Gelmir. The mountain still bears the wounds of the Shattering, its slopes littered with ruined camps, siege engines, broken soldiers, and the remains of loyalties consumed by fire. Near the Bridge of Iniquity, Anastasia the Tarnished-Eater invades once more, apparently still convinced that wandering Tarnished are a reliable source of food.
Beyond her waits the long ascent: ladders, ruined fortifications, demi-humans, soldiers, and the oppressive shadow of Volcano Manor above. In Volcano Cave, Shard enters the territory of the demi-humans and confronts the queen who rules over its depths.
At the summit, the Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast guards the final approach. Shard has faced its kind before, but this creature is larger, harder, and entirely at home within its crater. Living stone, gravity, and violent momentum test every lesson she has learned about distance and patience.
Beyond the beast stands Volcano Manor… a place that welcomes powerful Tarnished only to ask them to hunt their own kind. Shard arrives tired but changed. The climb has left its mark, and she already feels a little stronger, a little more vital, and less likely to vanish beneath the first serious mistake.

Ah, the Golden Road ends in a rock-cat headbutt and a polite assassination club with complimentary dining room… Altus hospitality never disappoints. Good to see Shard discovering the ancient truth: all the lore in the world means squat when you’re jam on the cobblestones. As a skeleton, I applaud any newfound respect for structural integrity.
The Altus Tunnel “family reunion” with two crystal cousins felt like awkward holiday dinner, minus the gravy and plus concussions. Windmill pastures offering wheat, waltz, and well-done villagers… nothing says festival like eau de barbecue. And charming a carriage escort so the guards do the murdering for you? That’s management.
Anastasia still on her all-Tarnished diet, Gelmir reduced to an OSHA violation of ladders, and a cave queen ruling over gremlins who shop at the Rusted Jewelry Outlet. Then the Fallingstar Beast, a magnetized murder-cow that hates personal space. Volcano Manor beckons with smiles and a hit list; honestly, who could resist? From the Rumor Pit, I salute our sparkle mage’s evolution: sturdier bones, same delightful chaos.
Where the golden road breaks, the lesson ripens: lore is a lantern, but the hand that carries it must first survive the night. In the tunnel below, crystal grows like a second thought, patient, indifferent; miners scrape and cough while kin made of geode argue with their wayward mage-sister. Family is tightest where edges cut.
The windmills twirl a harvest hymn no priest would bless, and the dancers keep time with smoke. Charm is a gentle theft – borrowing other wills so that yours remains unsinged – and the carriage becomes a stage where confusion does the killing. Every mask leaves a bruise on the face beneath.
Gelmir is a cauterized memory, still hot to the soul’s touch; even the hunger that hunts you feels like liturgy. Up the ladders, past queens and broken engines, the body learns to harden its ‘maybe’ into ‘not yet.’ The Fallingstar Beast speaks gravity’s old language, and Volcano Manor answers with hospitality sharpened into betrayal – growth measured as callus. To endure is to change shape; to change shape is to risk forgetting which wound first taught you to live.
Oh! Golden roads should end in holes; that means they were useful. Crystals are just rocks that learned manners, so that family spat made sense to me. Windmills are giant fans for drying good mud, and those happy spinners were probably checking the ground’s bounce. The troll carriage looked like a traveling shovel without the scoop.
That Fallingstar Beast was a very opinionated pebble. The floor was surely slippery from all the sky. If Anastasia’s hungry, she ought to pack a sandwich. Volcano Manor seems cozy… warm dirt! Keep digging, Shard; the earth likes you.
