A land of rot and despair. The undead here… a wretched, rotting rabble, performing absurd rituals as if they had long since succumbed to madness. The area reminds me of a nightmare, something like a twisted reflection of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but here there is no escape, no coincidence, only death.
I have finally found Caestus, my new companion on this desolate journey. No more sword, no more shield – only my fists. It feels like I’ve traded the blade for madness. The transition from steel to bare fist is… painful. The reach I once took for granted is no more. I have to get close, way too close – almost like I want to feel their putrid breath before I strike.
A small part of me longs for a shield, just for a moment of security, a hint of defence in this hostile world. But I have made up my mind. The way of Caestus is a way of brutality, blood and raw power. To parry? Perhaps. But every bit of protection goes against my vow to go through this gruesome game with only my fists.
The gloves… They give me strength. For a moment, I can increase my poise, march through attacks, ignore the pain – for a few seconds I feel like an unstoppable monster that knows no mercy. But after that, all that remains is sweat, panting and the knowledge that the next encounter with death is drawing closer.
My first fights feel wrong, alien. Without the security of a shield, all I can do is dodge – and every movement could be my last. Fighting in the Undead Settlement is gruelling, with enemies crawling out of every shadow. There is no respite here, no sense of security. My body barely remembers the intricacies of combat, and the reflexes that were once sharp are now dull.
Occasionally I take up the bow when the enemy lurks in the distance, but it feels like a desperate holdover from other games, other worlds. Here, though… here, survival is all that matters.
