Here it is, Lords of the Fallen. It has received significantly worse reviews than expected. I don’t really know what to expect, in the best case a new Darksouls, in the worst case a cheap copy with lots of design flaws, control errors and programming bugs. I think we’ll meet somewhere in between. Since there aren’t many alternatives on the market right now, Lords of the Fallen is a good choice… if you can get it on sale. I got lucky yesterday, so I thought it would be a good idea to give it a try.
In the beginning, the controls were always a bit difficult, I wanted to act too quickly like in Dark Souls or Elden Ring. In fact, it reminds me more of Thymesia, just not quite as grid-like. I think you have to get used to it first. I haven’t quite understood the principle of the lamp yet either, it forms a kind of portal into the world of the dead, which is more or less a parallel world to the current one, but with minor differences.
I like the setting, and I also like the idea of the world of the dead and the possibility of not dying immediately but being able to free yourself from it again. What I like less are the crashes in the game. At first I thought it was due to the graphics settings, but changing them didn’t change anything.
Then came the first boss – Pieta, She of Blessed Renewal. I have to say, well done, I liked that she was a bit crisper. However, it takes time to understand her patterns and how she announces which attack. Phase one still worked, with a bit of parry skill (yes, I’m slowly learning it) you got through phase 1 well, but then I found phase 2 significantly confusing and the lady was more in the air, with far fewer attack options. I quickly realised that you have to fight the woman aggressively. That worked out well and after many more attempts I was ready.
So far Lords of the Fallen makes a good, solid impression, but apart from the first boss I haven’t seen much yet.
