05 – The Eastern Road Through Liurnia

Beyond Stormveil, the cliffs opened into the drowned lands of Liurnia. Mist lay heavy over the lake, but Kranken had no patience for scenery. First came the map. Then the road east.

The Purified Ruins offered little purity and even less resistance. From there, a narrow path descended toward the Cliffbottom Catacombs, where old stone corridors still crawled with the restless dead. Kranken left with two new spirits at his command: a page, and the hardened sellswords of Kaiden. Even the fallen may prove useful, provided they know how to swing steel.

North of the catacombs, the road bent toward the Artist’s Shack. A Tibia Mariner drifted nearby, pretending death had made him untouchable. Kranken knocked him from his boat and continued on. Not far away, a lone Leyndell knight guarded an ancient prayerbook containing the secrets of dragon-worshipping lightning. Strange knowledge for a man with an axe, perhaps, but Kranken never refused a useful weapon.

Beyond the shack stood the Church of Vows, watched over by an ancient turtle pope who spoke with more patience than most living men. Kranken listened. Briefly.

The Black Knife Catacombs offered a more interesting challenge. At first, Kranken attempted something resembling a clean fight with the assassin hidden within. Then the creature slipped behind him and buried steel where honor should have been. The second attempt was shorter. Wild Strikes met the assassin’s face, and the Executioner’s Greataxe finished the argument.

A nearby Minor Erdtree was relieved of its guardian and its crystal tears, though the road north proved less welcoming. At the Frenzied Flame Tower, the yellow madness of the Three Fingers burned across the land. Kranken pushed through the village below and found Vyke waiting beyond it. Vyke did not care for poise. He walked through Wild Strikes as though the axe were rain against a closed window. Distance worked better. So did patience. On the third attempt, the frenzied knight fell.

The journey then turned west, toward the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel. The miners were no great threat. The broken beams were. Again and again, Kranken missed the same cursed jump, losing runes to rotten wood and poor footing. Five times. Perhaps six. By then, the runes no longer mattered. The jump did.

Eventually, he made it. At last, under the cover of night, Kranken reached the East Gate Bridge Trestle. The path to Raya Lucaria lay ahead. For now, the axe rested, the shield stood silent, and the dark waters of Liurnia waited.
