07 – Prisoners Domain

I thought I had begun to understand Nochte, but the Ruins still had other plans. From the Child Feeding Grounds I returned to the Nochtean Gate and crossed the Corrupted Gate into the Prisoners’ Domain, the grim fortress complex buried within the Ruins of Nochte. The path through Prisoners’ Way led first to Tishina’s Confessor, then deeper toward the darker reaches beyond. Past him, a vast pit opened below, and Ruk’s warning suddenly felt less like superstition and more like practical advice. Before going any farther, I turned back, secured my Gloom, and strengthened every Tarstone that still had room to grow.

That caution led to a few worthwhile detours. Executioner’s Pulpit, one of the hidden Beacons inside the Prisoners’ Domain, had to be cleansed through the Central Sewers and rewarded me with the Squall Stone. Another Beacon below, Slumwater Drain, led through poisoned sewer passages and yielded the Ironpiercer’s Stone. The deeper Nochte stretches, the more it feels less like a ruin and more like a machine built to process prisoners, punishment and despair.

Back in Marrow Keep I checked once more on the tunnel digger, with predictably little to show for it, and then curiosity found a better way to waste my time. Behind a breakable wall near Sester Genessa’s chamber waited a chained chalice. I broke all four chains and communed with Chaos, which dragged me into the Desolate Keep. Once inside, retreat became difficult enough that there was little point resisting. So I cleared the flooded halls, dealt with the Grisha and the rest of the Keep, and emerged with very little that felt worth the detour. Some places hide treasure. Others merely hide inconvenience.

Eventually I returned to Nochte and descended to the true test: the Nameless Captive. He was not a boss to overwhelm carelessly. His defense punished greed, and proper guards and parries mattered. I landed a few clean counters, but in the end patience gave way to pressure. My Faithful Doubles kept him occupied, the Grisha answered often enough to knock him off balance, and I simply refused to let him breathe. He took several attempts, and he was anything but easy, but when he finally fell I could not escape the feeling that I had already grown beyond the version of Genessa who once struggled against every serious encounter.

Afterward I returned to the Outskirts of Mammon. For the first time, the world feels smaller. Not safe. Not empty. Just less endless than it once seemed.
