04 – Catacombs

In the shadows of the ruined catacombs, where the constant dripping of water and distant groans and moans are the only sounds that break the silence, I crept through these damp, dark corridors as a lone assassin in search of long-forgotten treasures. I actually wanted to get to the citadel, but this labyrinth of torture, pain and suffering, peppered with traps and the bones of those who met their end here before me, surely has one or two secrets yet to be uncovered. The air was heavy and smelled of mould and decay, a constant companion that clung to my clothes and skin.

Armed with dagger and shield, I felt my way forwards. Each step could be my last, so carefully did I place my feet on the cold stone pavement. Suddenly I heard a creaking – a sound that was not one of the usual ones. I instinctively jumped to the side, just in time to avoid a falling trap that would otherwise have abruptly ended my journey. But by triggering the trap, I had attracted the attention of a demonic knight. In these vaults, death lurked around every corner, ready to devour those brave or foolish enough to enter its dark depths.

Despite the imminent danger, I had to venture further into the depths of the catacombs. As I had to pass through the catacombs anyway, it made sense to recover one or two treasures, in my case weapons to ensure my continued survival. My heart was beating wildly when I finally came across an old, jewelled dagger in a hidden chamber, well, jewels, it was rather vampire-like, but it was a nice find. With a triumphant smile, I secured my finds – weapons and armour that would be of use to me on my further journeys. The shadows may be deep and the dangers great, but for those willing to face them, treasures beyond comprehension were revealed. It was one thing above all else here, incredibly dark and stuffy. I was glad when I found the old entrance to the citadel, right after the giant commander “Champion”, who was a good three times my size. Unfortunately, he wasn’t three times as clever.
